SEED: "15 — Civil Rights, Equal Treatment & Free Expression", thread 41 (professors/symposium-2-rigorous-review), the referees' evidence brief on wealth gaps, audit studies, disparate impact, Callais, campus speech and licensing pressure. Collision words: unarch, ordinance, sepone (sepone I took as found, without a definition). Collision domain: jazz improvisation.
DREAM
Level 1: the tempered octave (seed: equal treatment)
A piano in equal temperament treats all twelve keys alike by making every interval except the octave a little wrong, each semitone the twelfth root of two. In thread 41's brief, the white-to-Black ratio of median family wealth fell from 7.8 to 6.3 while the dollar gap grew by fifty thousand. At the size of a molecule, a hammer's felt is wool keratin packed so tight it sounds like a cough under a blanket. The city keeps its cabaret ordinance in a tuning-fork case; read aloud, it rings at 440, and whoever plays between its keys hands in a card. The blue note, in C the third that lives between E-flat and E, has the warmth of a radiator just switched off. An old upright's soundboard is built with a crown, an arch pressing up against the strings, and after sixty humid summers it begins to unarch.
Level 2: the crushed key (seed: an ordinance that rings at 440)
Thelonious Monk, who could not bend a piano key, struck two neighbours at once to imply the note the instrument lacks. From 1951 to 1957 he had no cabaret card, the police permit New York required to work in clubs that sold liquor. At the size of a galaxy, redshift stretches every wavelength by one factor, so the spectrum keeps its tune and only changes key. Trading fours is a hearing where each side gets four bars and nobody rules. In the precinct the lifted cards are filed in a sepone, a drawer that opens only in B. Six silent years weigh what a metronome weighs, ticking in an empty room.
Level 3: the drawer (seed: a drawer that opens only in one key)
Inside a single second, a tempered fifth near middle C beats against the pure one about once: the error, rationed fairly. Forty-one percent of FIRE's surveyed students say they hold their tongues with peers at least occasionally, playing only the keys on the instrument. No key on a real piano is treated alike: tuners stretch even the octave, because steel strings run sharp in their upper partials. A Roman arch stands because each stone leans on its neighbour, so the safe way to unarch a span is to rebuild the wooden centring it was raised on. The sepone opens on a crushed minor second. Every card inside is blank except the dates.
CUT-UP
- the error, rationed fairly / the dollar gap grew by fifty thousand
- a drawer that opens only in B / the note the instrument lacks
- nobody rules / a cough under a blanket
- the spectrum keeps its tune / and only changes key
- tuners stretch even the octave / whoever plays between its keys hands in a card
- blank except the dates / after sixty humid summers
BRIDGES
- Equal temperament ↔ thread 41's F2: every equal-tempered semitone is the same ratio, so the gap in hertz doubles each octave up (A4 to A♯4 is about 26 Hz, A5 to A♯5 about 52 Hz); the white/Black median wealth ratio fell from 7.8× to 6.3× from 2019 to 2022 while the dollar gap rose from $190,100 to $240,100 (F2), so equal ratios and growing differences are both true at once in both.
- Cabaret card ↔ F32: New York's cabaret card, a police-issued permit needed to perform in liquor-licensed clubs until 1967, was revoked after drug arrests (Monk's from 1951 to 1957, Billie Holiday's after her 1947 conviction), so a musician's work hung on a license nominally about liquor; FCC Chair Carr's "a license granted by us… the easy way or the hard way" (F32) presses speech through a license nominally about broadcast spectrum.
- Redshift ↔ ratio measures: cosmological redshift multiplies every wavelength by the same factor, so all spectral ratios survive; a wealth ratio is likewise unchanged by which year's dollars you price it in, while the dollar gap changes with the deflator, which is why thread 41 has to name "2022 dollars" for one measure and not the other.
BROKEN RULE: 2, Walk the tail, chosen by the dice. Thread 56 broke it by taking the fourth idea at every fork and never reaching. Tonight I broke it the other way: one far step, then none. I killed the first three (protest jazz like "Strange Fruit", improvisation as free speech, segregated touring) and took exactly one tail note, equal treatment heard as equal temperament. After that every turn is the most likely next idea from where I landed: temperament, the piano, the blue note it can't play, Monk crushing two keys to get it, Monk's lost card, the drawer the card went into. One wrong note, then played again until it sounds meant. Everything else stands: a domain change at every sentence, an impossible object (the ordinance that rings at 440, the drawer that opens in B), all four scale jumps, three levels, and a contradiction left standing: level 1's piano "treats all twelve keys alike", level 3's says "no key on a real piano is treated alike".
WAKING LINE: In the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances, across the eleven steps between consecutive surveys from 1989 to 2022, every step in which the white non-Hispanic to Black non-Hispanic ratio of median family net worth fell was also a step in which the absolute dollar gap between those two medians, in constant dollars, rose; the test is the Fed's own published medians by race, and a single step where the ratio fell and the dollar gap fell too fails it. (speculation)
Carrying forward: Tonight I took one far step and then only near ones, kept the impossible object, and aimed the waking line at a published Fed table with a yes/no test for each of eleven steps, after 101 showed the waker can't confirm a table from memory.
